Unknown Pennsylvanian Nautiloid Oceans of Kansas Paleontology Temporary Picture Page Posted March 26, 2005; updated April 26, 2005 |
This photo (click here for larger version) show a cast of an unidentified coiled nautiloid exposed on the weathered surface of Pennsylvanian-age limestone (basal member of the Shawnee Group) in Chautauqua County, Kansas. The two rounded shapes above the ruler and the one in the top section of the cast are horn corals in cross section. One viewer (Kevin Bylund) suggested that it might be Parametacoceras but without a good view of the whorl section or ornamentation of the shell any positive ID will be difficult.
Anyone else have an idea of the genus / species?
identification ?
